Save Our Sleeper!
The future of Cornwall's sleeper train is under
threat from the Strategic Rail Authority, so it is our job to make our voices
heard and prevent this terrible proposal from becoming reality. That is why
in June I challenged Under-Secretary of State for Transport, Derek Twigg MP,
to guarantee the future of the service.
Speaking in the House of Commons, I highlighted the importance of the service,
saying “the sleeper service provides the only way for businessmen to avoid
wasting half a day travelling in one direction or another.”
In response, the Minister acknowledged my concerns but refused to guarantee
the future of the service, confirming only that there would be an eight week
period of consultation before any final decision is taken.
As far as Cornish businesses are concerned, scrapping the sleeper service
would be a massive blow. With Newquay airport under threat and Cornish roads
over-burdened in the summer months, the rail service provides a crucial link
– and it’s one of the only ways of getting to or from London before midday.
The Minister needs to recognise the importance of this service for local business
and tourism before it’s too late.
